NACL Training Vocabulary
The Animal Work is
the investigation into the performative capacities
of the human organism, focusing on the performer's
ability to control and manipulate energy, to respond
creatively and intelligently to interior and exterior
impulse, to develop physical articulation, and to
awaken attention to group and personal "presence".
This work is explored through a series of demanding
individual and group physical exercises, some developed
by Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba and their students,
and many developed by Brad Krumholz in an effort
to further the performers' progress during his experiences
with NACL.
The Vegetable Work is the investigation into the vibrational
possibilities of the human voice, in relation to
sound, text, and song, using exercises which engage
the full physical and imaginative flora of the actor.
The philosophy of vocal work holds that the voice
is a muscle and like the body-- it can contain a
multitude of technical, emotional and imaginative
possibilities which define, change, and sculpt the
space through action. Inside The Vegetable Work we
also use many songs from all over the world, which
allow the actor to discover the subtleties of vocal
vibration through precise melodies and complex harmonies,
with a great attention to the power of listening.
The Mineral Work comprises the various techniques of mining
personal and interpersonal resources, in an effort
to unearth the raw materials which can be crafted
into a gem and placed into a performance setting.
The methods of creating performance material can
include the actor's construction of an action based
on an event in his or her life, or from a dream;
the creation and repetition of an individual physical
improvisation; the doing and setting of a group
improvisation; work with a text, song, or musical
instrument; the execution of a physical sequence
based on a series of pictures; setting an action/story
using an object.
