"American Value"
Sojourn Theatre (Portland,
Oregon) with NACL, Carpetbag Brigade, and Local Community |
“What
does being an American mean to you?” “What
are your core values?”
This year’s festival opener is a theatrical exploration of these
questions—a community performance project directed by Michael Rohd
of Sojourn Theatre, with NACL, guest stilt artists from California’s
Carpetbag Brigade, and members of our own politically and socially diverse
community. The performance will combine documented interviews from
around the county with stilt walking, song, chorus, and story-telling. NACL
is looking for local people who would like to get involved as performers
or to be interviewed by the artists and organizers. |

"Nor the Cavaliers Who Come with Us"
One Reed Theatre (Toronto, Canada) |
| A vivid physical play directed
by Daniel Mroz about a Canadian tourist’s
search for ‘an intelligent source of evil
in the world.” His quest takes him
to Mexico, the home of his heroes and a net of
personal entanglements: love, bullfights, the Virgin
of Guadalupe and an apprenticeship to a mysterious
horse doctor. He enters into an epic contest with
the spirits of the conquest of the New World, and
his belief system is questioned. The audience sits
on all four sides of the playing space to watch
a delightful performance in an intimate, dream-like
setting. |

**ALSO,
DON'T MISS** |

|
| Back by popular demand and
with a new ending! Last year, The Mystery of Lakewood
House, a site-specific experimental mystery drew
record crowds. The audience is divided into
three groups and visits various locations around
NACL to catch glimpses of the characters’ stories,
the music, imagery, and mystery until the final
scene reveals the truth at last. A classic
NACL show about which Laurie Stuart of the River
Reporter writes: “The ensemble at NACL has
indeed developed an original Upper Delaware play
that is sure to become a favorite legacy. It combines
cutting-edge theater with general audience appeal
and serves it generously, with love for the area
and the theater experience. It is truly a
delight for both young and mature audiences.” Don’t
miss it this year! |
