ULTRA LEFT VIOLENCE & 15 PHOTOS

  • NACL 110 Highland Lake Road Highland Lake, NY, 12743 United States (map)

Friday December 1st features another double-header presentation of New Works by Robert Lyons and Daniel Irizarry (One-Eighth Theater & Soho Think Tank) and by Paul Pinto and Kristin Marting (HERE Arts).

ULTRA LEFT VIOLENCE is described by its creators as “an anti-capitalist dialogue/lecture/manifesto run amuck. With live music.”

Ultra Left Violence reunites playwright Robert Lyons and director/performer Daniel Irizarry. Their Fall 2022 hit My Onliness was called “a welcome gust of weird” (New York Times) and “the most insane show now playing in New York City” (Theatremania). Their earlier collaboration Yovo has been performed in NYC, Poland, Cuba, and South Korea, and has been translated into Spanish and American Sign Language. Both plays are included in My Onliness and Others, a collection of six plays by Lyons published in Fall 2022 by Mercer Street Books.

15 PHOTOS draws on traditions of the medieval bard. It is a virtuosic song cycle for solo performer Paul Pinto, who, through chants, songs, dance, and gesture, needles the ancient epic in service of his own reflections on modern masculinity. Combining Arthurian legend with John McTiernan action movies, the Romans, Thai boxing, Beowulf, and stories about New Jersey, Paul bobs and weaves between long passages of puckishly quick verbiage and aching melancholia.

Originally commissioned as a set of concert arias for the Resonant Bodies Festival, Paul was joined by Con Vivo Music (accompaniment) and Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew (lighting), who together designed an intimate environment where the audience sat at a giant Arthurian table and the singer performed atop it, around them, and nested within the crowd. 15 Photos is scored for a single vocal performer with electronics and a modular band which improvises on simple motifs and drone tones. Light and choreography are essential elements of the score. The work will be presented by HERE in the 2023-2024 season.

Paul Pinto is a composer, performer, opera-sermonizer, and multi-disciplinary dabbler who makes music, new media, micro-theatres and durational performance by himself and with his friends. Some of those friends include the collectives thingNY, Varispeed and LoveLoveLove.

Kristin Marting is a director and creative producer of hybrid work based in NYC. She has premiered works at HERE, 3LD, Ohio Theatre, and Soho Rep. Her work has toured to 7 Stages, Berkshire Festival, Brown, MCA, New World, Painted Bride, Perishable, UMass, Moscow Art Theatre and Oslo. Kristin is the recipient of two prestigious MAP Fund awards, a nytheatre.com Person of the Decade for outstanding contribution, a Leader to Watch by Art Table and a BAX10 Award. She is Founding Artistic Director of HERE and co-founding director of PROTOTYPE festival.

PARTNER RESIDENCIES

NACL cultivates partnerships with NYC-based theatres that become part of our growing artistic family. Artistic Director Brad Krumholz, in conversation with the artistic leadership of The Brick, The Bushwick Starr, HERE Arts Center, and JACK, selects artists from these organizations' upcoming season that would benefit from the special resources of a Deep Space Performance Residency.
