IN THE LAB

Maya Sharpe is working on a new performance that will be produced by The Brick in NYC.

Time is running out for the Human Kind before the earth goes into full self sedation. The Trees have always been the guardians of the earth, but they now must conserve their strength to save themselves. Who will save the Human Kind from self destruction and destruction of all that is in their path? Is there someone, something that can speak for The Trees, who speak for all things that inhabit this planet?

While in residence, Maya will be focusing on threading elements of song, text, sound design, and video design into the story line. The public sharing of this work will include excerpts of scenes, and a demonstration of how these elements have been stitched together in this evolving experiment in storytelling.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

MAYA SHARPE is a multi-passionate maker and thinker. Maya's passion lies in exploring simplicity in humanity through composition to demonstrate that there is more of a connection and love between everything than the politically derived disconnect and hatred. Maya has been seen on stage in such things as: HAIR (Broadway, West End & The Public Theatre), Anything That Gives Off Light (The TEAM), La MaMa Cantata (La MaMa), 1969: The Second Man (NEXT DOOR @ nytw), Animal Wisdom (Bushwick Starr, Woolly Mammoth Theatre), Hound Dog (Ars Nova), Terce (HERE ARTS CENTER), and many others. Maya has a band called Maya Sharpe & The Natural, which has performed in various venues in NYC and Los Angeles.

THE BRICK PARTNERSHIP

The Brick is one of our NYC partner theatres participating in a program that gives artists access to the NACL residency center to develop work that will be subsequently produced at the partner theatre.

The Brick Theater is a not-for-profit dedicated to developing and presenting the work of pioneering emerging artists and career experimenters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We are the artistic home for work that pushes boundaries and spans the ever-evolving spectrum of performing arts, theatre, dance, video, virtual reality, and visual arts. By nurturing emerging artists, sustaining ongoing relationships with frequent collaborators, and removing financial barriers for artists to create work, we create a diverse, accessible, and inclusive artistic community for the city’s most daring artists. We welcome adventurous audiences with low-cost and sliding-scale ticket prices to make performances accessible to all.

Founded in 2002, The Brick has established itself as an essential experimental venue for the production of compelling, new, high-quality work. As a vital part of the New York artistic community, we present 250-300 live performances per year at our two spaces, The Brick and Brick Aux, and welcome over 10,000 audience members each year.
