the box collective - Heroines

  • NACL 110 Highland Lake Road Highland Lake, NY, 12743 United States (map)

Inspired by the stories of Greek tragic heroines, our work explores how their wounds traverse the mythological and penetrate our personal experiences as modern women. How do our bodies and psyches hold these wounds and what is their medicine? So far, these stories have been told through the male lens and these women portrayed as villains. But why? Are they not the heroines of their story? Can the contemporary woman uncover, understand, access, and liberate the medicine within these ancient wounds?

Using burlesque as a form of open investigation into the dynamics of sex, power, and pleasure, Heroines excavates moments between the seams of the private and public persona, removing layers of the mask, and revealing what truth lies beneath.

During their residency at NACL, three female theatre makers/performers, Sara Fay George, Andrea Goldman, and Greek native Maria Menegaki will be joined by composer, Dani Campos (remotely from Spain), creating music and soundscapes to support their exploration of where physical bodies meet the mythological body. Their residency will culminate in an open rehearsal where the public is welcomed to a sneak peek behind the curtain of the box rehearsal process.

The box collective is an international artistic company established to explore and present new and emerging theatre work that blurs the line between art and performance. The objective is the creation of an immersive, living art that breaks down the performer-spectator divide, allowing an audience to exist within the production and thus in turn to be changed by the experience. This is theatre of immediacy, necessity, and risk-taking. This is theatre that comes from a question and a need to know.

“The box” is a company founded and run by women in New York City with relationships and collaborations throughout Europe. They continue to grow into new territories both artistically and geographically.
