OUT OF MIND is a hybrid lecture-performance that explores the neuroscience of depression. Kowalchuk lends her brain to Dr. Waters, a neuroscientist and depression researcher at Mt. Sinai in New York City. OUT OF MIND begins in classic lecture format that soon transforms into-a multi-layered performance experience with poetry, song, and theatrical text.
Waters and Kowalchuk share the results of laboratory experiments, which make use of the actor’s craft to better understand how emotions are made in the mind and body. Members of the community are also heard in a soundscape (designed by Michael Coney) from interviews with them about their experience with depression.
The two creative partners unite in their disciplines to make scientific exploration accessible through the art of live performance, radicalizing both the form of lecture and theatre. Audiences are invited to participate in a Question and Answer period at the conclusion of the lecture-performance.
Out of Mind is co-produced by Hurleyville Arts Centre and NACL Theatre, with funding from EST/Sloan Project Commission for New Play Development.
